Raised in Upstate New York, Ms. Brown returned to her home state of New York after a 10 year hiatus. Amara moved to Boston to attend Northeastern University obtaining a B.S. in Chemical Engineering degree. Surprising herself along with everyone else, she decided engineering wasn’t for her and joined Teach For America (TFA). Placed in Charlotte, NC, she taught high school mathematics for 4 years at an urban magnet school. She coached teachers through her own teaching experience and for one year as a staff member with TFA. Missing her family and the joys of the Northeast lifestyle, Amara returned to New York to work for an educational non-profit before joining Teaching Matters. Working at TMI has pushed Amara to think how to build her own urgency for math education into others through relationship building and supportive practices.
