Michelle Macchia is an early literacy scholar and practitioner with over fifteen years of experience as an elementary school teacher and teacher leader in public and private elementary schools in California, New Jersey, and New York. Dr. Macchia joined the Early Reading Matters project at Teaching Matters because of her interest in helping primary grade teachers in high-needs, urban schools better understand and use high-leverage, research-based practices to advance student learning.
Dr. Macchia has presented at national conferences on topics around the use of culturally responsive learning environments to leverage literacy learning outcomes for young children. Her research interests include elementary teachers’ use of discussion during guided reading and the social context surrounding teaching and learning. She holds a B.A. in French & Linguistics from UCLA, an M.A. in Educational Administration from Teachers College, Columbia University, and an Ed.D. in Teacher Leadership from Rutgers University.
