The Impact of Small Group Instruction

by Jacobē Bell, Network Director

The teachers at X242 are successfully implementing small group instruction that centers on students’ identities and cultures to improve learning gains, as evidenced by improved Panorama survey results and iReady screener data.

Mr. Romano used the Click & Clunk protocol to help his small group figure out the meaning of unknown words in this passage about the Great Depression.

During the classroom visits, we noticed teachers floating from group to group while students were engaged in their work. In a beautiful moment of connection, Ms. Cuni was introducing a passage about mosquitoes to her small group. She asked the students, “In my language, this is how we say ‘mosquito.’ How do you say it in yours?” A student answered her in Spanish, and he leaned in closer, suddenly more interested in the lesson.
