Case Studies

New York, NY

NYC Reads

New York City is undertaking a groundbreaking citywide initiative, standardizing the literacy curriculum across the nation’s largest school district.

In 2023-24, Teaching Matters was a pivotal partner in NYC Reads, working with over 30,000 students across 70 schools in Brooklyn and Queens, many serving underrepresented and marginalized communities.

Our districts saw a significantly higher percentage of schools improve ELA proficiency than other participating and non-participating districts.

This year, that support has expanded to 7 districts in ELA and another 3 supporting the city’s sister-program in math, NYC Solves.

NYC Districts 9, 10 and 28

Teaching Matters implemented Foundational Literacy Matters in 40 schools throughout Districts 9, 10, and 28 in NYC.

The tier II program targeted hundreds of kindergartners and 1st graders who were non-readers in February. In just 8 weeks, 82% became readers.

Newark, NJ

Teaching Matters has been the district’s reading partner helping to implement a new phonics program, establish small group routines, and plan literacy workstations. 150 K-2 teachers from 27 schools are taking a new approach to Reading Instruction.

86% of students targeted as late non-readers became readers in just 10 weeks.

Network for School Improvement

For the past 4 years, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Teaching Matters has managed a community of middle schools working together to ensure all students are prepared for high school and beyond, through the integration of culturally responsive-sustaining practices and continuous improvement methods.

Our NSI is helping students improve ELA State Test scores.
Teaching Matters 8th graders who attained proficiency on the NYS ELA Exam grew by 3 points compared to those at schools assigned to our control group.

Our NSI is making large gains relative to other NSI in meeting key GPA thresholds.
Our NSI attained large gains (aka “effect sizes”) relative to other national NSIs in the % of 8th grade students achieving at least a 3.0 for their ELA, Math and Overall GPA.

High Quality Curriculum Expertise
